Understanding your surroundings is important when walking in the countryside and building up your outdoors skills to enhance that knowledge is essential.
The Walker’s Guide to Outdoor Clues and Signs by Tristan Gooley has been written to help you improve your natural navigation skills and sensory awareness while walking.
Author Tristan Gooley found fame with his two previous titles, The Natural Navigator and The Natural Explorer, and with this book he takes the reader through the natural world in an effort to enhance their knowledge of the environment that surrounds them.
At it’s core, the book is a comprehensive guide to often ignored art of natural navigation for walkers, a skill that many walkers should try to understand the basics of in order to remain safe especially if the day does not go according to plan.
Useful reference
The author has collected together over 850 outdoor clues and signs for weather forecasting, tracking, navigating you way along urban, coastal and night walks along with a number of other interesting snippets that will aid you on you next trip into the outdoors.
The style of writing is very relaxed and easy to consume making understanding of some of the more “delicate” skills more accessible. As good as the descriptions are, the book would benefit from having more illustrations to allow more people to identify some of the signs especially those new to the outdoors but that is a minor issue.
Summary
The Walker’s Guide to Outdoor Clues and Signs shares the joy and benefits of observing the environment surrounding you and how it can tell you so much about where you are. A fascinating read for the walker and outdoor enthusiast.
